Dance Marathon

Franklin will be hosting its twelfth dance marathon on Friday, November 10th, 2017 from 1:30-3:30 P.M. in the lower gym. It is open to ALL Franklin students and admission is only $5.00. For those new to Franklin, this is not your average middle school dance. No awkward slow dances, no waiting to be asked to dance, and no talent necessary! All students are expected to dance as fast as they can and as much as they can, with appropriate breaks for snacks of course!

For those unfamiliar with dance marathon as a charity fundraiser, this event is affiliated with the University of Iowa’s Dance Marathon and the Children’s Miracle Network. Funds raised help support pediatric cancer patients at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. Each year we are blessed to have numerous college students affiliated with Dance Marathon join us. In fact, some years we have had some of our very own Franklin alumni return to dance with us as U of I student dancers. It’s good fun for a good cause. We hope you can join us this year too!

The last six years our dance was made even more special by the presence of Jack Hoeger, a pediatric cancer survivor and his family. Jack is now a junior at Kennedy, but his sister is still a Franklin Bolt, so please take this opportunity to come celebrate Jack’s journey with them.   If you want to learn more about Jack and his fight against cancer, you can check out Jack’s own You Tube video “Get to Know Jack” by Livestrong Jack.

See below for five ways to support our school’s efforts!

The cost is only $10.  View order form for t-shirts here.  Order forms can also be picked up outside Ms. Dvorak's room, Mr. Jeffords room in 208, or Ms. Young's room in 416 and are due to the office by Wednesday, October 25th.  Those that order by Monday, October 16th have a chance to win a prize!

During the week prior to the dance, students are asked to bring in coins to their 2nd period classes.  All coins count toward a positive total for your home room. All checks or paper money count as negatives; these help bring down the totals of your competitors. So drop your coins in your home room basket and any paper money in the baskets of your closest competitors.

High home rooms each day will win suckers, licorice, etc. Students in the high home room at the end of the week will receive a free slice of pizza at the dance.

We need baked goods for our bake sale which runs after school two days! Bring baked goods to room 206 before school and shop for goodies after school on Thursday, November 9th and Friday, November 10th.

We need 12 packs of pop which will be sold during the dance.

We need candy items.  In the past, we have used candy to entice our reluctant students to the dance floor and to keep them dancing for the entire two hours. These special reward songs occur intermittently throughout the dance. For example, we’ve handed out individually wrapped Twizzlers while doing the twist, Laffy Taffy to the dancers who make us laugh the most, etc.

Snacks are also used as prizes for our winning Money Mash homerooms and our Spirit Dancers.  If you are interested in making a donation, please send the candy/snacks to the main office with a “for dance marathon” note attached. See below for candy needed.

  • Individually wrapped Twizzlers
  • Tootsie rolls
  • Laffy Taffy
  • Tootsie pops
  • Starburst
  • Fruit snacks (any variety)
  • Plain M&M’s/Skittles
  • Snack size bags of pretzels/cookies

These students collect donations totaling $25 or more and turn them into the office using an official pledge sheet. In return, they enter the dance early to meet our U of I guests and have reserved seating for the pie throw.  In fact, our most successful fund raisers get the chance to put a pie in the face of a beloved staff member!   Spirit Dancer Form
