Franklin will be hosting its thirteenth dance marathon on Friday, December 6th, 2019 from 1:30-3:30 P.M. in the lower gym. It is open to ALL Franklin students and admission is only $5.00. For those new to Franklin, this is not your average middle school dance. No awkward slow dances, no waiting to be asked to dance, and no talent necessary! All students are expected to dance as fast as they can and as much as they can, with appropriate breaks for snacks of course!
For those unfamiliar with dance marathon as a charity fundraiser, this event is affiliated with the University of Iowa’s Dance Marathon and the Children’s Miracle Network. Funds raised help support pediatric cancer patients at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. Each year we are blessed to have numerous college students affiliated with Dance Marathon join us. In fact, some years we have had some of our very own Franklin alumni return to dance with us as U of I student dancers. It’s good fun for a good cause. We hope you can join us this year too!
The last seven years our dance was made even more special by the presence of Jack Hoeger, a pediatric cancer survivor and his family. Jack is now a Senior at Kennedy, so please take this opportunity to come celebrate Jack’s journey with them. If you want to learn more about Jack and his fight against cancer, you can check out Jack’s own You Tube video “Get to Know Jack” by Livestrong Jack.
See below for five ways to support our school’s efforts!
1. BUY AN OFFICIAL DANCE MARATHON T-SHIRT
The cost is only $10. View order form for t-shirts . Order forms can also be picked up outside Mr. Jeffords room in 208, or main office and are due to the office by Monday, November 18th. The earlier you turn in your form, the more chances you have to win a prize!
2. BRING YOUR CHANGE FOR THE MONEY MASH
The "Money Mash" change war between homerooms begins Thanksgiving week on Monday, November 25th and runs through Wednesday, December 4th. Students may be scrounging for loose change as all coins count positively and all checks and paper money count as negatives. Your students will begin asking for money, and it's great time to get extra chores done! Winning homerooms at each grade level will receive doughnuts and juice during home room on dance day!
3. DONATE FOOD ITEMS AND/OR BAKED GOODS
Three bake sales will be held after school in the concession area near the gym. We will have a friendly competition this year to see which grade level donates the most for our sales! In addition to baked goods, 12 packs of pop.
Sixth grade bake sale-Thursday, November 7th
Seventh grade bake sale-Thursday, November 14th
Eighth grade bake sale-Monday, November 25th
4. BE A SPIRIT DANCER!!
Students wishing to do even more for the cause can collect $25 or more from friends and family and turn it in the office with a "Spirit Dancer" pledge sheet. These students are admitted free and a bit early, eliminating the wait in line to get into the dance. You will also receive a free slice of pizza and a drink, AND have a chance at winning a price for your efforts. The top three fundraisers get to choose their prize and some lucky winners will get to put a pie in the face of a beloved staff member. The effort of our spirit dancers is truly appreciated, and they have increased in number each year. We are hoping even more students will take on this challenge for 2018. Pick up a Spirit Dancer Form and hit up those relatives over Thanksgiving!
You can also make a direct online contribution to the U of I Hospitals and Clinics.
5. JUST COME TO THE DANCE
Just be a dancer for kids with cancer!!! You’ll get some great exercise, have a great time, and help out a great cause!
