Dance Marathon

DANCE MARATHON IS COMING!!

Franklin will be hosting its thirteenth dance marathon on Friday, December 14th, 2018 from 1:30-3:30 P.M. in the lower gym. It is open to ALL Franklin students and admission is only $5.00. For those new to Franklin, this is not your average middle school dance. No awkward slow dances, no waiting to be asked to dance, and no talent necessary! All students are expected to dance as fast as they can and as much as they can, with appropriate breaks for snacks of course!

For those unfamiliar with dance marathon as a charity fundraiser, this event is affiliated with the University of Iowa’s Dance Marathon and the Children’s Miracle Network. Funds raised help support pediatric cancer patients at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. Each year we are blessed to have numerous college students affiliated with Dance Marathon join us. In fact, some years we have had some of our very own Franklin alumni return to dance with us as U of I student dancers. It’s good fun for a good cause. We hope you can join us this year too!

The last seven years our dance was made even more special by the presence of Jack Hoeger, a pediatric cancer survivor and his family. Jack is now a Senior at Kennedy, so please take this opportunity to come celebrate Jack’s journey with them.   If you want to learn more about Jack and his fight against cancer, you can check out Jack’s own You Tube video “Get to Know Jack” by Livestrong Jack.

See below for five ways to support our school’s efforts!

1. BUY AN OFFICIAL DANCE MARATHON T-SHIRT

The cost is only $10.  View order form for t-shirts .  Order forms can also be picked up outside Mr. Jeffords room in 208, or main office and are due to the office by Monday, November 26th.  The earlier you turn in your form, the more chances you have to win a prize!

2. BRING YOUR CHANGE FOR THE MONEY MASH

The "Money Mash" change war between homerooms beings Monday, December 10th and runs through Thursday, December 13th. Students may be scrounging for loose change as all coins count positively and all checks and paper money count as negatives. Your students will begin asking for money, and it's great time to get extra chores done! There will be daily prizes and an overall winning home room at each grade level. Students in those top home rooms will receive donuts and juice during their home room time on the Monday after the dance.

3. DONATE FOOD ITEMS AND/OR BAKED GOODS

We need baked goods for our bake sale which runs after school two days! Bring baked goods to room 206 before school or the main office and shop for goodies after school on Tuesday, November 27th, Thursday, November 29th, and Thursday, December 13th. We ask each eighth grader to provide a dozen baked goods or a 12 pack of pop or Gatorade. Drinks can be sent in any time; baked goods should be brought on the morning of the bake sale. Please mark any items that contain nuts or peanut butter, so we can separate these. While eighth graders are expected to provide donations as the official class sponsors for the dance, anyone wishing to donate baked goods is welcome to do so!

4. BE A SPIRIT DANCER!!

Students wishing to do even more for the cause can collect $25 or more from friends and family and turn it in the office with a "Spirit Dancer" pledge sheet. These students are admitted free and a bit early, eliminating the wait in line to get into the dance. They receive some extra bling and have front row seating for the pie throw at the end of the dance. The top fundraisers also have the opportunity to put a pie in a staff member's face! The effort of our spirit dancers is truly appreciated, and they have increased in number each year. We are hoping even more students will take on this challenge for 2018. Pick up a  Spirit Dancer Form and hit up those relatives over Thanksgiving!

You can also make a direct online contribution to the U of I Hospitals and Clinics.

5. JUST COME TO THE DANCE

Just be a dancer for kids with cancer!!!   You’ll get some great exercise, have a great time, and help out a great cause!
