8th Grade Canoe Trip

On Friday, May 15th, all eighth grade students will participate in a canoe trip down the Maquoketa River. The rain date is Friday, May 22nd.  Monticello Canoe Rental is located just off Highway 151 near Monticello, about 45 minutes from Franklin Middle School. We will leave Franklin at 9:00 a.m. and return about 2:45 p.m.  Students not attending the canoe trip will report to school unless called in by a parent/guardian.

We want our eighth graders to have a special end-of-the-year outdoor activity to share with one another. We will launch canoes just outside the city of Monticello and arrive at Pictured Rock Park about two hours downstream.  Safety is a primary concern with all water activities.  Students must wear life-vests at all times and are not allowed to tip canoes.  Violators will face consequences, which could include the right to attend other end-of -year activities.

No swimwear is allowed.  Students are encouraged to wear clothing that will protect them from the sun and bugs.  Hats are allowed.  Information about proper use of the canoes will be discussed with the students before the trip. No electronics/phones allowed on the trip. We will grill hotdogs for lunch and provide chips and a drink. Students who bring their own lunch must put it in the “Sack Lunch Cooler” in front of Mrs. Edgerton’s room before 8:00 a.m.  No food or drinks are allowed on the bus!

The cost of the trip is $15.00 per student.  Payments should be handed in at the Main Office.  Checks payable to Franklin Middle School.

Please sign the permission slip and the waiver and have your son/daughter return them to Mr. Jeffords by Friday, April 24th.  We encourage parent-volunteers to join us on this trip.  If you have questions, or are interested in volunteering, please email Mr. Jeffords bjeffords@cr.k12.ia.us (ph. # 558-1519)
