A note about Reye’s Syndrome, Aspirin and Influenza from Nurse Neilly

Reyes Syndrome is a disease that is almost always associated with a previous viral infection such as influenza or chicken pox. It can affect all organs in the body, and most lethally, the liver and brain. It typically develops when a child is beginning to recover from a viral illness. Research has shown a link between Reye’s Syndrome and the use of aspirin and other salicylate containing medications, over the counter products, and topical use products. This is a reminder to not give aspirin or any products containing salicylate to children/teens under the age of 19. Some common products containing aspirin or salicylates are Pepto-Bismol, Pamprin, and most acne medicines.

Attention 8th Grade Students and Parents Iowa law requires that any student who is newly enrolling into an Iowa Public or nonpublic accredited high school must provide the school proof of a dental screening that was completed one year prior to the student's enrollment as a freshman. Since you child will be a 9th grader in the fall of 2010, they will need to meet this requirement. The Certificate of Dental Screening form can only be completed by a dentist or dental hygienist. Only this form will be accepted. Please have your family dentist complete the form at your child's next dental exam, and return it to the school health office by February 1, 2010. The dentist may also fax the certificate to the school health office (398-2454). Dental offices have copies of the form or you can print the form from the Cedar Rapids School website.

Need Student Helpers Are you looking for a way to help out, volunteer your efforts, or build the resume'. Here is that chance. Franklin Middle School would like to invite any student to participate in being a student helper 1 period a day for one quarter during the school year. As a Student Helper you might be running passes, helping complete small office tasks, and any number of small jobs that can be done quickly and with little physical effort. There could also be days where you actually might be able to use it as a study hall. Students who have done this in the past have enjoyed the experience and felt that it was rewarding to do. It is important that Student Helpers are responsible, trustworthy, and have a strong academic focus. Student Helpers are selected to do there helping during PE or Vocal Music. Certain scheduling requirements will need to be met in order to be eligible. Please see Mrs. Baker in the attendance office or Mrs. Dvorak to get an application and for more infomation. Happy Birthday Birthday greeting go out to CheLynn Thaylor (6th). Have a great day!

Dear Franklin Community,

Welcome to the Benjamin Franklin web site. I hope that you find the web site informational for your specific needs. Franklin has had a storied past as a junior high, a high school, and for the last 20 years, a middle school. I am very proud of Franklin ’s history and excited about being part of Franklin ’s future.

At BFMS, we have high expectations for students, staff, and parents. Excellence is expected in the areas of academics, extra-curricular activities, and behavior. Although these areas are commendable, we will continue to strive for “Excellence for All”. This district-wide initiative is very evident in every classroom at Franklin .

This fall we will continue to focus on our three school wide goals: reading improvement, math computation, and the social/emotional well being of our students. Our plan is to make sure that all parties involved both understand the goals, and work to become part of the solution.

My charge to parents is to be involved. It has been proven that students that have parents involved in the school process will have more success in schools. There are a multitude of opportunities to volunteer in the classroom, and we would love to have you also be apart of our progressive PTA that supports Franklin . Most importantly, ask questions of your students, check the Centerpoint grading system, or contact your teachers. We are here to make middle school a productive learning experience.
